STITCH A BORDER 'MIAO CHINESE' STYLE WITH RUTH SMITH

Members and friends had a wonderful day on Saturday 22nd, hand stitching
using traditional patterns from the Miao people of China.

Ruth showed us some traditional techniques and stitches. Several were familiar but not used in quite the same way. We learnt some stitches using two needles, including cast-on' stitch which is used in Miao embroidery. It was shown to Ruth by a Dutch friend and also features in Brazilian embroidery. Truly an international stitch!

A paper pattern is used as the basis for the design and stitched over.

We tried different techniques on a border which can be applied to a bag, book cover or other small item.

Ruth's bag showed us what could be done - many thanks to her for an inspirational day.
